The International Medical and Technological University (IMTU) is a private university established in 1995 by the Vignan Educational Foundation (VEF) to promote the spirit of South-South cooperation. The VEF of Bangalore moved with establishing the university in Tanzania at the behest of the Late Mwalimu Julius K Nyerere, the First President of the country.


The seeds of the venture were sown by His Excellency Dr. Benjamin William Mkapa, the third President of the United Republic of Tanzania when he was the Minister for Science, Technology and Higher Education, with the support of His Excellency Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, the fourth President of the United Republic of Tanzania, when he was the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The establishment of the university symbolizes the long standing partnership between Tanzania and India as part of the implementation of the South - South cooperation. The University is committed to providing quality higher education in Tanzania, the African Region and the developing world.

IMTU was inaugurated by Shri. I.K. Gujral, then the Honorable Prime Minister of India on September 17, 1997. IMTU was visited by His Excellency Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalaam, then the President of India in 2005 during his official visit to Tanzania.


A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was established between VEF, Bangalore and Government of Tanzania in establishing the university. The university was recognized by the Government of Tanzania through the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) and the charter awarded in 2010 that was signed by the president of Tanzania.

IMTU Facts
The International Medical and Technological University (IMTU), established by Vignan Educational Foundation (VEF) of Bangalore, India, was the first private medical university in Tanzania. At the invitation of Late Mwalimu Julius K Nyerere, the First President of Tanzania the VEF moved to Tanzania with its resources to build IMTU. The University which was inaugurated by Shri. I.K. Gujral, then the Honorable Prime Minister of India on September 17, 1997.

Students with significant majority Tanzanians along with students from other parts of the world, live, learn and play in the sprawling University campus, located in Dar es Salaam. To date more than 1400 medical doctors and several hundreds of allied health professionals have graduated from the IMTU and are practicing in communities across Tanzania and other countries world.
